La Torre di Velate
Eccoci di nuovo giunti a marzo con un infinito carico di aspettative sulla primavera che (almeno da calendario) dovrebbe raggiungerci a fine mese! Nell’attesa dell’agognato bel tempo – lo so, avete ragione: l’inverno è stato mite, non ha quasi nevicato, ma… io ho comunque freddo e non vedo l’ora di andare a prendere il sole al lago! – possiamo temporeggiare con qualche gita rilassante riscoprendo le bellezze della nostra provincia.
Per questo mese vi propongo di scoprire, sbirciare o rivedere la Torre di Velate (Varese).
Posta nell’estremità nordoccidentale del nostro capoluogo di Provincia, la Torre di Velate risale all’XI secolo, quando viene costruita come parte della struttura difensiva del Limes prealpino. Appena un secolo dopo, però, venne parzialmente distrutta durante la guerra tra i Visconti di Milano e i Torriani di Como (a cui i nobili di Velate erano affiliati). Ad oggi della Torre di Velate sono rimasti un lato, rafforzato dal corpo della scala attigua, e la parte di un altro.
La struttura della Torre di Velate è in pietra viva, con pianta quadrangolare, e si estende per quasi 30 m di altezza, distribuiti (secondo la disposizione delle finestre rimaste) su cinque piani. È attualmente gestita dal FAI – Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano.
Ben visibile esternamente, la Torre di Velate non è di solito aperta al pubblico; è comunque possibile visitare gli interni su prenotazione, approfittando anche su richiesta di approfondite visite guidate.
…Insomma, una parte della storia della nostra provincia che è un dovere e un piacere riscoprire.

Here we are again arriving in March with an infinite load of expectations in the spring, which (at least according to the calendar) should reach us later this month! Waiting for the craved good weather – I know, you’re all right: the winter was mild, it has hardly snowed, but… I’m still cold and I can’t wait to go sunbathing on the lake! – we can temporize with some relaxing trips, rediscovering the beauty of our province.
This month I suggest you to discover, peer, or re-view the Velate Tower (in Varese).
At the northwestern end of our provincial capital, the Velate Tower dates back to the eleventh century, when it was built as part of the defensive structure of the pre-Alpine Limes. However, barely a century later, it was partially destroyed during the war between the Visconti of Milan and the Torriani of Como (to which the nobles of Velate were affiliated). Today of the Velate Tower remained a side, strengthened by the body of the adjacent stairs, and the part of another side.
The structure of the Velate Tower is made of stone, with a square plan, and covers nearly 30 meters high, distributed (according to the arrangement of the remaining windows) of five floors. FAI – Italian National Trust, currently manages it.
Externally well visible, the Velate Tower is not usually open to the public; it is still possible to visit the interior on the reservation, taking also advantage on demand for in-depth guided tours.
… in short, a part of the history of our province that is a duty and a pleasure to rediscover.
