Una PASSEGGIATA al SACRO MONTE di Varese
Ai primi accenni di bel tempo, in qualunque mese avvenga, è inevitabile che si senta la necessità di uscire di casa, di scoprire il paesaggio e di immergersi nella natura circostante come se fosse la prima volta. Il clima di febbraio, anche nella migliore condizione, purtroppo non permette di sdraiarsi in riva al lago o in qualche parco ad abbronzarsi; ma la “Città Giardino” offre comunque numerose altre proposte: ad esempio, perché non approfittare dei tenui raggi di sole per fare una piacevole passeggiata al Sacro Monte?
Questo delizioso percorso pedonale di salita consiste in 2 km passando accanto alle bellissime 14 cappelle seicentesche, in cui si posso apprezzare le rappresentazioni di alcuni importanti episodi biblici. Per chi invece vuole raggiungere la cima senza sforzi, è possibile usufruire della funicolare attigua, costruita in stile Liberty nel 1909.
Dall’alto, il panorama è mozzafiato: non solo l’area varesina più prossima, ma anche i quattro laghi di Varese, Comabbio, Monate e Maggiore, le Alpi e le Prealpi. Nei giorni di piena visibilità inoltre lo sguardo può raggiungere anche l’area urbana milanese, comprendendo Duomo, Torre Velasca e piazza Gae Aulenti.
Per riposarsi adeguatamente, infine, prima di prepararsi alla discesa, ci si può fermare allo storico Caffè del Borducan: qui è possibile gustare il liquore di arance tipico. La sua storia è affascinante: pare, infatti, che D. Bregonzio, di origine varesina, esperto erborista e garibaldino, ne avesse inventato un prototipo esclusivamente alle erbe, chiamato “Dieci Erbe Campo dei Fiori”; durante un soggiorno in Algeria, però, fu colpito dall’intenso gusto delle arance (“Borducan” in algerino) e decise dunque nel 1872 di modificare il precedente distillato per aggiungervi questo nuovo sapore, dando vita all’“Elixir al Borducan”, la cui ricetta è ovviamente segreta. Riscaldati dal dolce sapore del liquore e dai suoi 35 gradi alcolici, la discesa sembra facilitata e il ritorno a casa certamente più allegro!
At the first hints of nice weather, in whatever the month it takes place, it is inevitable that you feel the need to leave home, to discover the landscape, and to immerse yourself in the surrounding nature as if it were the first time. The climate of February, even in the best condition, unfortunately does not allow to lie down on the lake or in some park to get tanned; still, the “Garden City” offers many other proposals: for example, why not take advantage of the soft rays of sunshine to take a leisurely stroll to the Sacro Monte?
This delightful pedestrian ascent is 2 kilometres, passing by the beautiful 14 17th-century chapels, where you can appreciate the representations of some important Biblical episodes. For those who want to reach the top without effort, you can take advantage of the adjacent funicular railway, build in Art Deco in 1909.
From on top, the panorama is breathtaking, inasmuch as it includes not only the nearest area of Varese, but also the four lakes of Varese, Comabbio, Monate, and Maggiore, the Alps, and Pre-Alps. Furthermore, in the days of full visibility, the overlook can reach the urban area of Milan, including the Main Cathedral, Velasca Tower, and Gae Aulenti square.
To rest properly, finally, before preparing for the descent, you can stop at the historical Caffè del Borducan: here, you can taste the typical orange-tasted liqueur. Its history is fascinating: it seems, in fact, that D. Bregonzio from Varese, skilled herbalist and soldier in Garibaldi’s army, had invented a herb-tasted prototype of this drink, called “Dieci Erbe Campo dei Fiori”; however, during a stay in Algeria, he was struck by the intense taste of oranges (“Borducan” in Algerian language), so much that, in 1872, he decided to modify the previous distillate to add this new flavour, giving life to the “Elixir al Borducan”, whose recipe is obviously secret. Warmed by the sweet flavour of the liqueur and its 35 degrees alcohol, the descent seems facilitated, and the return home certainly more cheerful!
